you were a constant
in my life that slowly faded
until all that was left were
your distilled fragments
scattered throughout my
weary existence quietly reminding
me of all of the 'what ifs' and 'why nots'
that made us what we were,
but it wasn't until my
mind woke screaming your name
at 3am that I realized that the you and I
I'd always dreamt of was as
distant and as those letters in
the alphabet because we were
never meant to be, never
meant to collide; we were just
my conscious' way of filling
a cavernous rift
within my failing reality--
we would never coexist anywhere
but within the fragile figments
of my imagination.

I catch the scent of you
just when I think you’re gone
you come with the breeze
all burnt matches
vanilla
and black coffee
a heady haze
which haunts my nights
and stirs my soul

midnight and you’re there
a spectral sleeper
in the space next to mine
you smell like coming home
and I reach my hand to touch you
to know you
to understand that fucking part of you
that you won’t let me see
but your body breaks at my touch
skin turns to dust to light to darkness

and I am left with only the scent
